Eco Policy

Responsible, sustainable, tourism

We take these issues seriously, but believe too that every one has their own choices to make regarding responsible tourism. We don't believe in being prescriptive and building in compulsory costs for carbon offsetting into our prices, as we are aware that many of our clients make their own arrangements and that would lead to "double charging". Instead, we give you the option, as well as some advice on our sustainable & responsible tourism policy.

Carbon offsetting

Whenever oil based fuel is burnt for flights, trains, cards, ferries etc it releases an amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) back into the atmosphere. Carbon Offsetting works by performing a calculation to estimate the amount of CO2 produced by a specific activity, then investing funds to absorb or prevent the emission of a tonnage of CO2 equivalent to that activities unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions. This is done by investing in projects that save energy emissions (efficiency-based offsets) or that absorb atmospheric CO2 (forestry-based offsets).

To off set the CO2 produced by your holiday with ourselves, we have worked with co2balance to calculate an average based on a typical UK return flight to Malaga, return transfer to Almuñécar and internal activity transfers via diesel vehicles. This calculation is, of course, an approximation, but we feel it is a qualified, valid, amount based on careful consideration and recommend you to offset your C02 here - now!

Water

Water is a scarce resource here - in fact Europe's only official desert is just to the east of us in Almeria. You can easily help reduce usage by the following simple steps:

Recycling

A large element of responsible tourism is waste management. Spain habitually recycles most of their waste and therefore only has a small capacity nightly waste food collection service. You will find the following containers around every town & village:

Please re-use plastic shopping bags as much as possible, and at the end of their lives give them a final curtain call or two as bin liners.
Help keep the weight of your baggage down by removing any unnecessary packing or wrapping from toiletries etc and leaving it at home.

Local products & supporting the local economy

Please make the most of local produced drinks & produce, especially if self catering. This in itself, rather than purchasing imported goods at the large supermarkets, helps the local economy, and reduces the environmental impact of transporting imported foodstuffs. Our municipal market has an excellent variety of the freshest local grown produce and now even has a thriving organic section.

Paper free office

We strive to conduct as much of our booking and administrative processes as far as possible as "paper free" processes. To those ends we no longer produce printed brochures by default, due to the environmental impacts of the paper production, ink processes and transportation impacts (even a small stack of paper brochures are heavy!). We instead now use PDF e-brochures, which can either be read on-line, saved to your PC to be read later, or printed locally if needed. We can also supply PDF fact sheets on certain activities if required.

Group sizes

We specialise in small groups and individual bookings. The maximum group size we normally cater for is ten. Keeping group sizes small helps reduce the impact on the local infrastructure, while ensuring you get a personal and tailored service.

Local customs

As part of our terms & conditions of booking, we ask all our clients to consider that laws and local customs and standards of what is right and reasonable behaviour, as well as dress sense, may well differ from those in their native countries. We operate a "zero tolerance" policy on drug abuse; If a client is under the influence of alcohol or drugs they will be refused participation in activities.
